Past KPPC Initiatives
Highlighting Our Journey and Impact
1ST KPPC SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM – August 2024
In August 2024, the Kenyan Program on Pedagogies for Community (KPPC) successfully conducted its inaugural campus program aimed at addressing tribalism and fostering civil society building in Kenya. The program brought together community organizers, religious leaders, and educators from across the country to engage in dynamic discussions on tribalism, religious differences, and community cohesion. Using the CEDAR pedagogy, participants explored the complexities of belonging, identity, and dialogue, applying practical tools to engage with differences in their communities.
Workshops and interactive sessions delved into the social, political, and economic challenges facing Kenyan communities, with a particular focus on promoting unity amidst diversity. Participants shared personal stories and learned strategies to mediate conflicts, foster inclusion, and build trust across cultural and religious divides. The success of the program has set the stage for future initiatives, reinforcing KPPC's commitment to creating a more cohesive and harmonious society.
This two weeks-long program laid a strong foundation for future collaborative projects and community-driven initiatives, with participants leaving empowered to take the CEDAR principles back to their communities to inspire lasting change.
Mapping Communities for Sustainable Coexistence
JANUARY 2024
In 2024, the Kenyan Program on Pedagogies for Community (KPPC) undertook a transformative initiative that set the stage for our First Kenyan Program on Pedagogies for Community held in August. This foundational activity, titled Mapping Communities: Exploring Kenya’s Tapestry of Culture and Conflict, was carried out in January 2024 to provide critical insights and a practical framework for the summer school’s theme, What is Kenya, Who is Kenya? Community, Culture, Conflict.
Communities and Locations Visited
- Preparatory Meeting: Held on January 8th to clarify objectives, finalize logistics, and assign roles.
- Lari: Explored the Kikuyu community’s history, including the impact of the Lari Massacre.
- Eldoret: Discussed cultural dynamics and tribal tensions.
- Bungoma: Visited an African traditional church and studied the Bukusu community’s heritage.
By visiting these communities, KPPC fellows gained contextual understanding, experiential learning, and groundwork for meaningful dialogue. This initiative exemplifies our commitment to fostering empathy and sustainable coexistence, laying the groundwork for transformative programs.
